component used for vertical transportation between floors in a building. It is used for transportation between floors and when there is a large height difference. Stairs should also be installed in multi-story and high-rise buildings that have elevators and escalators as the main means of vertical transportation. Although high-rise buildings use elevators as the main means of vertical transportation, they still need to retain stairs for escape in case of fire. Stairs are composed of a staircase with continuous steps (also known as a stair run), a platform (resting platform) and enclosure components. The horizontal projection distance between the lowest and highest steps of the staircase is the staircase length, and the total height of the steps is the staircase height. Stairs were engraved in the image of a heavy house on bronze ware during the Warring States Period in China. In Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, indoor stairs were liberated from traditional closed spaces, making them a decorative architectural component with rich shapes.
Chapter 33 of “Jin Ping Mei Cihua”: “Yue Niang wanted to go upstairs, but something strange happened. When she reached the middle of the stairs, the steps became steep. She uttered a cry and one of her feet slipped down.” Chapter 1 of Ba Jin’s “Destruction”: “After going up the stairs, the young man took out the key to open the lock on the door of the pavilion.”
